Trinity Episcopal Church
Down Through the Decades
The first Trinity Episcopal Church was located on High Street, near the Preston-McIntire intersection.

Trinity moved to its location on 10th and Grady in 1940. Here, the girls' choir poses with Father Fox. Shirley Thompson, on the top row, center, is still a member of the choir.

Father Henry Mitchell, top row right, poses with a group of Trinity boys in about 1964. But Father Mitchell had a vision for expanding the church and expanding its mission. Here he is at the ground-breaking for the current church location on Preston Ave. Standing at right, behind him, is Steve Waters, who still serves as parish administrator.

Under Father Mitchell's leadership, Trinity developed a number of guilds, established a child care center, and became a leader in civil rights causes. In addition, Father Mitchell became the first African American to serve on the school board and was active with many causes and organizations--most prominently, the Monticello Area Community Action Agency, or MACAA, which he co-founded with Drewary Brown.

Another Trinity choir poses in front of the Preston Ave. location in 1977. The church was renovated to its current appearance in 1994.
